How to Kickstart Your Metabolism To Lose Weight

December 11, 2010 by Matt

First off lets just first explain exactly what your metabolism is and how it affects you. “Metabolism is a combination of physical and chemical processes called anabolism and catabolism. Anabolism is the constructive phase of metabolism in which body cells synthesize protoplasm for growth and repair.”

Oh my gosh I went scientific way to quick in this post so lets dumb this down for us normal people. Essentially, it’s your body’s engine that uses food as energy and that energy is what burns calories. This is what can cause your weight to fluctuate up and down.

Was that better?

Ok now that we know what your metabolism is how do we lose weight? Well first I’d say it’s important to remember that your metabolic rate is determined partially by the amount of calories your body takes in each day. Obviously eating an unhealthy fast food meal or anything with high fructose corn syrup are high fattening calories and you’re going to have more trouble shedding those pounds.

So remember to eat healthier first.

Knowing that we need to kickstart that metabolism of yours and that can best be done with simple exercise. Before you think to yourself, “Dang it! I hate exercising.” Let me just stress this doesn’t mean go out and run 5 miles, or even go out and run wind sprints. This means really any exercising even if that’s simple walking will help you out.

On a side note doing strength training or weight lifting doesn’t boost your metabolism. It does however burn fat and make you more lean but the best way to kickstart is through aerobic training, which is constant moving around. If you do aerobics you will melt off pounds. Trust me!

The key to anything when it involves weight loss and the reason why almost every diet WILL essentially work is because they all primarily focus on two underlying factors: A balance of diet and exercise. I mean come on even Taco Bell has a spokesperson that claims she lost a ton of weight eating Taco Bell. Well that’s probably because you didn’t eat a lot and exercised like crazy.

If that’s the case I’ll put you on a Big Mac diet and tell you to run a marathon everyday. 🙂

But here’s a great little excerpt I just read that really breaks it down well so let me put up the old quotations so as not to steal anybody’s insightful thoughts.

“Eat fewer high-fat foods and less total calories. Choosing healthy foods, such as lean protein and vegetables, can actually increase your metabolism as well. Increase dietary fiber and limit sugary foods, alcohol, caffeine and don’t smoke. The best foods to increase your metabolism and help you lose weight are fish, dark green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, blueberries and other fruits, whole grains, and at least 8 glasses of water a day.

When your cells need energy they will break down carbohydrates first, then fat and finally protein. Your body converts carbohydrates into a form of sugar called glucose which is easily used as fuel by your body. Any excess carbohydrates you eat will be turned into fat for storage. Of course, any fat you eat will be stored as fat as well. Your body converts the fat you eat into body fat very efficiently. If you exercise and eat wisely, however, you will burn those fat stores and increase your metabolism.” –Laurie Hedlund

Another great way to kickstart your metabolism is to start with eating breakfast. You’ve often heard “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Well the reason for that is because it starts your body’s engine like we talked about earlier. Getting your body used to certain timing is important. Just like when you keep going to sleep around the same time you get more rest. Well when you start eating meals regularly then you help yourself to lose weight essentially.

If you really want to jump ahead and get serious you can also add whey protein to your dieting which will really speed up the process.

Here’s a great article I wrote so check it out over here: Whey Protein Powder
