Whey Protein Made It On Iron Chef America!

I knew from being a nutritionist that whey protein was really just building some steam in the health community but I never thought in a million years it would be talked about during an episode of Iron Chef America.

Let me explain how this happened because I was shocked to be honest.

It was a recent battle between NYC’s hottest and youngest competitor (24 years old) Emma Hearst who comes from a long lineage of scathing Italian blood versus Michael Symon the newest labeled Iron Chef. It was battle Mozzarella and it was pretty intense.

So how it all happened was that Symon decided to make his own fresh Mozzarrella so he had to separate the casein and the whey to form the cheese. Later in judging he got major props for how amazing of fresh milky cheese he created in the allotted one hour time it takes to construct 5 different plates using the same secret ingredient which in this case was the Italian cheese itself.

Far from stopping there he used the liquid that the mozzarella was in which was the whey in its purest form and (get ready for this) put it in the ice cream machine in his attempt to make what he called a sorbeto, or sorbet.

I kid you not that this was the one thing people were astounded by and at judges table during the end of the show where they taste and rate everything, this was the one dish they applauded. They commended him for using the whey and turning out an incredibly rich, yet healthy dish like whey/mozzarrella sorbet.

I couldn’t believe it. And when it was all said and done Michael Symon came out of this Iron Chef America Mozzarella challenge victorious. I’d like to think it was mainly due to the whey.

If you get a chance to watch this episode it is awesome. These guys are incredibly too and it makes me want to try some whey protein ice cream, I bet that tastes great and still has all the health benefits like the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants.
