Why grass? Because whey protein comes from cow’s milk. The nutritional value of the milk and whey protein depends on what the cow ate. Cows evolved to eat grass, so grass-fed cows have the best vitamins and protein. However, a lot of farmers feed their cattle corn and other grains because it’s easier and less costly.

But it’s not natural. That’s like asking a dog to become a vegetarian. Sure, a vegetarian diet can give the dog everything it needs to survive, but to be healthy it really needs to eat meat — that’s just the way it is. In the same way, asking a cow to eat corn but give us premium whey protein just isn’t possible.

That’s why it’s so important to look for whey protein that comes from cows that are fed grasses. These whey proteins contain more healthy omega-3 fatty acids, more valuable proteins, and more glutathione precursors for a better antioxidant profile in your body.

Plus, these whey protein powders contain every single amino acid that your body requires. And even better, whey protein contains high amounts of all the essential amino acids that your body needs. Well, not all grass-fed whey protein is safe. Some grass-fed cows are still given chemicals, sometimes indirectly. Farmers may spray the grass with pesticides to prevent disease; the cows ingest these pesticides and pass them on to you. And sometimes, grass-fed cows are still given antibiotics and growth hormones.

You have to read labels and investigate the companies very cautiously to find whey protein that comes from cows that are fed grasses without pesticides, that aren’t pumped up with unnecessary growth hormones, and that aren’t injected with antibiotics.


Whey protein powder that remains undenatured — pronounced “un-dee-NAY-tured” — is cold processed. Or, it’s processed at temperatures that are high enough to extract the whey protein but too low to hurt the valuable enzymes, proteins, and vitamins. This preserves the bioactivity of the nutrients, meaning they’ll be more effective in your body.

In contrast, over 90 percent of the whey proteins on store shelves are over-processed. They’ve been treated so heavily with intense, rapid heat or acids that the enzymes, vitamins, and minerals are literally bent out of shape.
